About Me
I'm Jimmy, a fine artist based in Washington, DC and originally from the Boston area. My work centers on capturing the beauty of urban landscapes and city scenes.
My journey as an artist dates back nearly as far as I can remember. I recall drawing Fenway Park with a 10-pack of Crayola markers and printer paper during breaks in the 4th grade; drawing basketball players with 15 foot wingspans in 5th grade, and many other "creative" works from my childhood.
I learned the foundational skills I use in today's artwork during my freshman year drawing course with Whitey Morange, who, in addition to developing my technical abilities, helped me see the world differently. Since that course, I have found endless inspiration from my surroundings, constantly planning subjects for my next paintings.
Throughout high school, I kept drawing when time allowed (which was not often), and, in undergrad, I was able to refine my skills in a drawing course with Farrar Hood Cusomato, who was also my painting teacher a few semesters later. In addition to introducing me to different drawing materials and teaching me how to paint and use color, she fostered a sense of creative freedom that I’m especially grateful for. Being able to explore my own style and process in a supportive environment helped me find joy in creating and gave me the confidence to continue experimenting as an artist beyond the classroom.
After undergrad, without access to an art studio for oil painting, I spent a few years exploring other mediums. I experimented with micron pens, pastels, and watercolors. While I loved the results of the micron pen drawings and will perhaps pick those up again, nothing quite matched the satisfaction of oil painting.
This led me to acrylics, which I had previously avoided because of a preconceived notion of their inferiority to oils. I was wrong. Acrylics instantly rekindled the joy I’d found in oils while offering unique advantages.
I started painting with acrylics while balancing a full-time job and part-time law school, so I mostly painted during summer breaks for a few years. Since then, I’ve been painting obsessively in my free time after work, working through a backlog of scenes I had been eager to capture—and sometimes giving my paintings law-themed titles to put that law degree to good use (partially kidding).
Painting allows me to slow down, study, and reinterpret places I often rush past, giving me a new appreciation for familiar spaces that I hope to share through my work.
Painting serves as a form of meditation for me, helping me disconnect from the noise of daily life and focus on the present moment. It also satisfies my drive to make progress on something tangible each day, offering a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
